NAIOP SoCal Orange County just held its second annual Real Estate Challenge featuring graduate student teams from the Chapman University Argyros School of Business & Economics and the University of California, Irvine Paul Merage School of Business Center for Real Estate. This year’s Orange Cup for the winners went to Chapman University’s five-member team.
The event, held April 20 on the UCI campus, brought together the students in a competitive battle to determine the highest and best use for a unique parcel of land in Southern California. To claim victory, the winning team accumulated the most points during written and oral presentations to a judging panel of local commercial real estate industry leaders, and a live audience.
For 2023, the competition site was a two-parcel site in Brea. The four buildings on the site are occupied in various states of leasing and its infill location positions it well for a variety of redevelopment uses. Chapman University’s winning presentation proposed a focus on healthcare-related office, as well as a new nursing school and senior living community.
Chapman University’s team included: Josh Dale, Bryce Grandison, Taylor Johnson, Rylan Mukssood, and Shaun Wiechmann. The UCI team was comprised of: Jon Bradford, Serena-Yuwei Dai, Dale Padelford, Alec Shaul, and Zakary Win.
The evening event also featured remarks by honorary industry coaches for each university. Chapman University’s honorary coach was Jason Krotts, founder and president, REDA, LLC and Chapman alumni partnered with UCI’s honorary coach Sean Rawson, co-founder, Waterford Property Company and UCI alumni.
“Both student teams demonstrated incredible creativity and it was evident how much work they dedicated to developing their in-depth proposals. Chapman and UCI have become an important part of the local commercial rea estate industry. I want to congratulate the Chapman team and our project site sponsor Healthcare Property Advisors for a tremendous showing and support,” said David Salisbury, NAIOP SoCal OC Real Estate Challenge Co-Chair.
