Cushman’s career spanned 60 years. At the time of his passing, Cushman was the chairman of global transactions and chairman of the board of Cushman & Wakefield, the global real estate services firm founded by his grandfather, J. Clydesdale Cushman, and great-uncle, Bernard Wakefield.

Cushman first joined Cushman & Wakefield Inc in New York City in 1963, following his graduation from Colgate University. A few years later, in 1967, he opened an office in Los Angeles for the company. Then, in 1978, he teamed up with his twin brother, Louis B. Cushman, and left Cushman & Wakefield to form Cushman Realty Corporation. In 2001, Cushman Realty Corporation merged with Cushman & Wakefield. John Cushman III became chairman of the combined Cushman & Wakefield.

Cushman was involved in many philanthropic and commercial real estate industry causes. He served as National President of the Boy Scouts of America and is a member of the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. He also served as a commissioner of the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth, a board member of the California Region I Homeland Security Advisory Council, and a trustee of the Urban Land Institute. Other organizations he was involved with include The Real Estate Roundtable; the University of Southern California’s LUSK Center for Real Estate; Fellows of Claremont University Center; Colgate University, Hamilton, New York; the Institute of International Education, New York City; and more.

Cushman’s family shared this comment about his passing: “The Cushman family is very sad to share that John C. Cushman, III passed away peacefully today at the age of 82. His wife Jeanine of nearly 60 years and his four sons, their wives, and all 10 grandchildren have all been by his side along with John’s two brothers. He was so extremely proud of his family and leaves behind an incredible and iconic legacy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, including countless friends and colleagues. John’s successes in commercial real estate were extremely notable but his positive impact on so many careers are what mattered to him even more. John always valued the importance of giving back and was a staunch supporter of many philanthropic efforts. His contributions to so many organizations will contribute to his legacy.”
