This past Tuesday, HomeAid Orange County, in partnership with the Children and Families Commission of Orange County, kicked off the 9th Annual Essentials donation drive at their Community Partner Luncheon held at Casa Teresa Emergency Maternity Shelter in Orange. The countywide campaign to collect diapers and other essential items for babies, led by Honorary Chair Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, will take place the week before Mother’s Day, April 29 – May 8, 2016.
“We are pleased to support the Essentials campaign and are proud to be a part of this great effort in improving the lives of homeless mothers and their children in Orange County,” said Oliver Jones, United Parcel Service. “On behalf of the campaign partners here today: the YMCA of Orange County, Lennar Homes, NBC4, Bank of America and the Automobile Club of Southern California, we are proud to participate in and support the HomeAid Essentials drive.”
In addition to the campaign’s community partners, the luncheon hosted representatives from each of the seventeen providers who operate housing facilities built in partnership with HomeAid and serve homeless families.
“We would like to thank HomeAid, the Children and Families Commission, and Sheriff Hutchens for leading the campaign to ensure that every baby in the HomeAid service provider network has essential items for one year,” stated Lisa Wood, CEO, Casa Teresa. “This is a tremendous gift to our shelter and allows us to save funds normally spent on diapers, baby wipes, etc. for use on programs to help our residents achieve self-sufficiency and to lead productive, independent lives.
The luncheon attendees heard directly from a program participant at Casa Teresa about how the donated items will impact her life directly.
“I had so many opportunities I ended up throwing away for drugs and alcohol and my life quickly went downhill, I slept in parks and stole my food,” said Caitlyn. “I came to Casa Teresa right from the streets with just a trash bag of clothes and I never would have imagined the love and hope I would find. Though this campaign, you have provided me the items necessary to care for my unborn son, help that without would have made my challenging situation even worse, if not impossible.”
Donation drop off locations will be located throughout Orange County, including the YMCA and County of Orange public libraries. A complete list of drop off locations and additional information about the donation drive is available at www.homeaidessentials.org.
HomeAid Orange County is the founding chapter of a national non-profit organization with the vision and purpose to end homelessness. Through its mission of building new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach, HomeAid, develops housing, advocates and provides service in the community to the homeless.
Since 1989, HomeAid Orange County – founded by the Building Industry Association of Southern California's Orange County Chapter, has completed 55 developments with nearly 1,136 shelter beds throughout Orange County. HomeAid acts as the housing developer and liaison between services providers, community volunteers, builders and specialty contractors. Tragically thousands are still in need of shelter each and every day. To help solve this social crisis, new housing developments are being planned and constructed throughout Orange County.
