REDWOOD CITY, CALIF. – DBO2, a software services company based in Redwood City, Calif., announced that Gilbane Building Co. has won a national “Safety That Soars” award from Industrial Safety & Hygiene News using DBO2’s SafetyNet system.
SafetyNet, a pocket PC-based safety inspection and analysis program, helps clients in construction, mining, energy, insurance and other industries at high risk for catastrophic loss, to predict and prevent worker injuries while improving quality and productivity. SafetyNet acts like a “net of prevention” by identifying hazards and unsafe trends before they turn into accidents.
According to Gilbane Corporate Safety Director Anthony O’Dea, SafetyNet was used extensively on Gilbane’s Heritage Village at Elton Corner project in Freehold, N.J. Heritage Village is comprised of two three-story senior housing buildings with 75 condominium units in each building.
Gilbane, which generally performs commercial construction, worked on a 16-month construction schedule in order to fast-track this residential project. In addition, approximately 100 smaller, residential subcontractors worked on the project and many of their tradesmen spoke English as their second language.
By using the SafetyNet program, Gilbane was able to identify and communicate safety hazards to the project superintendent and foremen before they became accidents. Nearly 120 SafetyNet inspections were conducted during the time Gilbane worked on Heritage Village, with more than 20,000 observations collected. SafetyNet reports were generated instantly from the observations, and the reports were then used in weekly meetings to identify and correct any unsafe acts. Over the 16 months, more than 725 potential problems were discovered and corrected before any accidents occurred. All in all, the project ran for 450 days and 124,000 hours without any recordable injuries.
O’Dea said that the SafetyNet system is currently used company-wide on all Gilbane projects. Since Gilbane started using SafetyNet in 2005, the company has posted 914,000 observations during more than 9,300 inspections. In the past two years, the program has identified and made safety recommendations to correct more than 38,000 unsafe conditions.
“SafetyNet helps us predict where accidents are most likely to occur so we can address these hazards well before they become accidents,” O’Dea said. “The program also focuses our safety efforts on those areas that represent the greatest risk. Moreover, it creates a dialogue between our safety managers, project superintendents and subcontractors on how we can all work together to create a safer work environment for everyone on the job.”
