Tidewater Capital has completed work on Oakland’s first Moxy Hotel, a young-at-heart brand by Marriott International. The 172-room boutique hotel was developed utilizing the opportunity zone investment program. The project, which represents one of the first new hotel developments in downtown Oakland in nearly a decade, validates the increasing appeal of the city’s downtown urban environment.
In partnership with co-developer Graves Hospitality, Tidewater is introducing Moxy Oakland Downtown as the first modularly constructed Moxy in the U.S., applying this sustainable construction method to generate less waste and increase the building’s energy efficiency.
According to the company, constructing the first modular Moxy Hotel in the U.S. enabled Tidewater to reduce construction time by 25%, compared to an average construction timeline for a hotel of the same size. The hotel consists of five levels of factory-built wood-frame rooms over two levels of a site-built concrete-frame.
Tidewater partnered with Creative Growth, a local non-profit that serves artists with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities, to feature an array of eclectic, urban artwork throughout the hotel. The hotel is also partnered with Chapter 510 and the Department of Make Believe, a local writing and publishing workshop for Oakland youth and will feature the work of young Oakland writers throughout the hotel.
Boasting an expansive street-level amenity space utilized for programming such as weekly events and exhibits featuring local artists, musicians, performers and neighborhood businesses, the property also includes a number of stylish “Plug and Meet'' gathering areas that provide modern ergonomic seating, large writing walls, and 56-inch televisions for presentation projection. Moxy Oakland offers cozy but thoughtful rooms and a unique bar check-in experience where guests not only receive their room key, but a craft cocktail on the house.
Additional hotel amenities include a healthy continental breakfast and an evening bar featuring wines by the glass and local brews. The hotel will also feature the on-site restaurant, La Palabra, from the chef behind Oakland’s popular Cuban parlor and cafe, Caña. La Palabra is slated to open at Moxy Oakland Downtown in Summer 2021.
The building’s façade showcases Oakland’s vibrant art scene with a six-story art installation titled, Shapeshift Oakland. Created by world-renowned, Oakland-based artist Thom Faulders and installed by 100-year-old sign company YESCO, this 12,000-pound dramatic aluminum structure offers an entrancing visual labyrinth of a city known for its continuous change. Creative brickwork patterns echo the neighborhood’s vitality and character while the second-floor exterior terrace embraces the urban energy with vistas of the cityscape.
Moxy Hotels is Marriott International's bold, new brand that debuted in September 2014 with the opening of the Moxy Milan. A boutique-hotel concept for the modern-day traveler, Moxy is a fresh and innovative brand combining dynamic design and adept service at an approachable price point. With tech-enabled rooms, vibrant lobby spaces and warm, spirited service, Moxy aims to surprise both leisure and business travelers with a thoughtful, memorable and fun guest experience.
