Calabasas-based NewMark Merrill Companies Inc has launched NewMark Merrill Hadler Community Partners, a new venture focused on the acquisition, development, management, and operation of retail centers in under-invested and under-supplied communities. The firm was co-founded by NewMark Merrill Companies President and CEO Sandy Sigal and former NewMark Merrill portfolio manager Jermaine McMihelk, who will serve as Managing Director and oversee day-to-day operations.
“Our mission is to enrich communities by driving economic success and growth, along with partnering with local leaders, and creating multi-generational gathering spaces that benefit all aspects of communities,” said McMihelk. “We will embrace, involve, and empower residents and businesses in every community that we serve. We want to not only be known as the best operators and investors in retail shopping centers in under-invested and under-supplied communities, but also the most innovative, inclusive, and collaborative.”
Sigal added, “The launch of NewMark Merrill Hadler Community Partners is a concerted effort to focus on embracing, impacting, and making a real difference in the community. We have always focused on under-invested communities with projects in Inglewood, Rialto, and others but now we have a dedicated company and team providing these markets with the focus that they deserve.”
McMihelk previously served as an Asset Manager with Primestor Development Inc, where he oversaw the operations and performance of their grocery-anchored shopping centers held in partnership with Federal Realty Investment Trust. Prior to that, he spent five years at NewMark Merrill, most recently serving as a portfolio manager. McMihelk also founded an investment business in which he opened the first African American-owned 7-Eleven franchise on historic Crenshaw Boulevard with 100% of employees being local. Additionally, McMihelk currently serves as Vice Chairman on the board of T.H.E. Health & Wellness Centers, which provides healthcare to 18,000 low-income patients across six locations in Los Angeles County.
