Construction has just topped out on Santa Monica College’s (SMC) new Health, Fitness, Dance and Physical Education Building, a 63.8k sf project that is part of the main SMC Campus. The new building, which is being built by Bernards and was designed by Gensler to LEED® Silver criteria, incorporates sustainable measures that include natural lighting and ventilation and solar-heated hot water.
The three-story fitness and dance building is located at the heart of the campus and will serve as a focal point for student physical activities. It includes classrooms, as well as a fitness center, climbing wall, dance studios, offices, and locker rooms. The new building will also house a new central plant facility that provides chilled water and thermal energy storage (“TES”) to multiple campus buildings. When completed, the building will adjoin and function as part of an existing pavilion and gymnasium, 18.8k sf of which Bernards is renovating as part of this project.
Bernards is also under construction on a new $18.4 mil Music and Performing Arts Complex on a 4.4-acre site at the SMC Madison Arts Campus. This facility was designed by the architectural firm of DLR Group as a comprehensive teaching, exhibit and performance facility and expands the capabilities of SMC’s iconic Broad Stage performing center, which opened in 2008. It is located just east of the Broad Stage, features a multi-use, 541-seat music hall with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, a rehearsal room and a music lab. The project is also targeting LEED-Silver certification.
