The Oxnard Unified School District (OUSD) has chosen LA-based Bernards to rebuild the Harrington Elementary School Campus. Designed by Dougherty & Dougherty, the new school will be built on play fields of the existing 8.3-acre campus at 2501 Gisler Ave, between Saviers Rd and Pacific Coast Highway.

Once the new building is completed, Bernards will demolish the existing, outdated structure. Interestingly, the project is a “site adapt” of the La Tijera K-8 School which Dougherty & Dougherty designed and Bernards built for Inglewood USD.

The current school, which was built in 1955 and modernized in 2004, serves 558 students in grades K-6, but the new school will accommodate up to 700 students in grades K-5, in accordance with the latest state standards. The new structure will include 23 general-purpose classrooms, four kindergarten classrooms, and one Resource Specialist Program room to special needs students, as well as support and administrative facilities, food service/cafeteria facility, a media center and multipurpose room, physical education spaces, and restrooms.

Construction will take place while the existing school is occupied. Steve Pellegren, Bernards’ Vice President of Preconstruction Services, noted that working on an active school campus complicates construction. “Our team of professionals, however, has extensive experience working in this type of environment and has developed special construction strategies that minimize disruption to students and faculty and maximize safety,” he said. “These strategies will be customized for the Harrington project to ensure construction does not impede regular school activities, as well as meet the district’s goals and expectations.”

Pellegren noted that similar strategies are currently in use at Bernards other Southern California school projects, including the Manhattan Beach Unified School District’s Mira Costa High School and Beverly Hills Unified School District projects.

Funded by a combination of sources, including the California State Schools Facilities Program, Harrington’s $22.8 mil budget includes construction and related contingencies, demolition and site work. “OUSD is taking a ‘reuse of plans’ approach to create cost efficiencies and minimize the timeframe for design and construction,” said Pellegren.

He noted that design and preconstruction plans must be submitted for approval by the Division of State Architecture by December 27, 2013. Construction will commence in November 2014, with completion scheduled for January 2015.
