Scopely Leases 60k sf in Culver City

4/18/19

Scopely has signed a lease for 60k sf of office space at a new property in Culver City. The building, located at 8888 Washington, is an expansion of Runyon Group’s Platform project. It is expected to be completed in late 2020.

Platform, which first opened in 2016, is expanding just west of its current 130k sf space. Its flagship property is currently home to 50k sf of retail and restaurant space and 80k sf of creative and office space. Scopely will occupy the entire available office space at the four-story property (floors two through four); the ground-floor space will be retail. Scopely and Runyon are collaboratively building out the under-construction space to best suit the needs of the business.

Jacob Bobek of CBRE represented the tenant, an interactive entertainment and mobile games company. The property ownership, Joseph Miller and David Fishbein of Runyon Group, represented themselves in the deal.

Following a massive year for Scopely, which recently launched two new games -- Star Trek Fleet Command™ and Looney Tunes™ World of Mayhem -- the company will more than double its Los Angeles footprint by 2020, significantly expanding its headquarters upon completion of the project late next year.

Culver City is a thriving submarket within the Southern California region, due to constrained supply of office space in the face of ever-increasing demand from tenants. Culver City is expected to continue to boom, including other new developments such as Ivy Station and Culver Steps.

“The biggest entertainment and tech companies have been securing as much space as possible in downtown Culver City. A longtime home of Sony Pictures, the area has become increasingly popular due to its strategic mid-city location and abundance of easily accessible amenities and transportation,” said Bobek. “The Platform expansion will be a state-of-the-art building that will serve as a fantastic new headquarters for rapidly expanding Scopely and will allow them to continue to grow the business and team.”

Scopely currently leases 28k sf in the Hayden Tract area, just half a mile from Platform. Until completion, Scopely will temporarily take 4k sf additional space in the Samitaur Building in the Hayden Tract area. Scopely has been in its current LA headquarters since June 2015 and has expanded a number of times since then. In late 2017, Scopely also expanded its operations to Barcelona, leasing a 7k sf office space for its growing international team. The office now has more than 75 employees.

Scopely has raised more than $250 mil in financing from leading venture capitalists, tech luminaries and cultural icons including Greenspring Associates, Greycroft Partners, Revolution Growth and Evolution Media Partners as well as Kobe Bryant, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Peter Guber (CEO of Mandalay Entertainment), among many other notable investors.
