Balfour Beatty recently broke ground on a new performing arts and recreation center for Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), a non-profit organization that provides underserved youth with free programs in academics, arts and athletics in a nurturing environment. The 38k sf facility is located at 615 S. La Fayette Park Place, in LA’s Lafayette Park area, near downtown.
Balfour Beatty is providing construction management services overseeing $4.3 mil in site improvements that include site grading, building foundations, water, power, sewer, storm drain systems, site improvements, and landscaping. The three-story, state-of-the-art facility will consist of 50 modular units built from single-use shipping containers and converted to custom-designed activity rooms, community rooms, music rooms and creative lab spaces. Each space features full LED lighting, ductless HVAC systems and floor-to-ceiling windows. The energy-efficient systems significantly reduce utility usage, both conserving energy and reducing HOLA’s operating costs.
The project is made possible through funds raised through HOLA’s capital campaign. Additional project savings were achieved through partnerships and connections formed with the county and city of Los Angeles, including the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering and the Department of Recreation and Parks, which is providing a long-term lease to HOLA at virtually no cost.
Designed by project architects Berliner Architects and EDI Architecture, Inc., the new facility is slated to open its doors in the spring of 2018. Brian Cahill is division president for Balfour Beatty in California.
