One Santa Fe and 8500 [Burton Way], two major, mixed-use projects in the L.A. area, were recognized for design excellence and community impact at the recent 44th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards gala hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC). The awards were presented to the project teams, which included the building owners, designers, the contractor and developers for their contributions the region’s architectural achievements. Both projects were built by Los Angeles-based Bernards.

The event, moderated by Sam Lubell of the Architect’s Newspaper, celebrated the region’s 35 most notable new, innovative architectural projects, which span the full architectural spectrum, and was attended by hundreds of leading architects, developers, designers and building professionals.

A distinguished jury of owners, contractors, architects and civic leaders selected this year’s winners from hundreds of submissions. The Grand Prize went to the new Emerson College Los Angeles facility in Hollywood. Other winners included the L.A. River, the Ace Hotel in Downtown L.A., the Forum in Inglewood, and Tongva Park in Santa Monica, among many others.

Caruso Affiliated’s 8500 project captured the Architectural Award in the “Mixed-Use” category. This ultra-luxury, mixed-use development designed by McLarand Vasquez Emsiek & Partners and façade design by Hetzel Design, consists of 87 residential units, atop distinctive shopping and dining amenities, as well as four levels of parking.

One Santa Fe, developed by a joint venture of Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group and McGregor, Cowley and Polis, garnered the award in the “Under Construction” category. This $160 mil, transit-oriented, mixed-use development in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District includes 438 residential units and 80k sf of commercial space. This contemporary project was designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture.
