Macy’s Renovation Completed at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Retail Center in LA

4/18/12

Completion of a multi-million dollar renovation of the Macy’s anchor store is the most recent step in a comprehensive, $35 mil transformation of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw shopping center in Los Angeles. The renovation has also included the addition of new, state-of-the-art movie theaters, several restaurants, a new dining court featuring a kid’s seating area and live entertainment venue.

The extensive Macy’s work included physical improvements to the store as well as the addition of new departments, fixtures and merchandise. The physical renovation included new paint, carpeting, gleaming white floor tiles, contemporary lighting, modern merchandising fixtures and wall displays throughout the three-story store. Next month, the main entrance on the first floor will undergo a remodel that features new furnishings, plants and colored concrete.

Located on 43 acres at 3650 Martin Luther King Blvd, at the intersection with Crenshaw Blvd, Baldwin Hills Crenshaw is owned by Capri Capital Partners and is being managed by Primestor Development Inc. It was constructed in 1947 and is said to be the oldest regional shopping center in operation in the United States.

The center was originally anchored by The Broadway and May department stores, and encompassed 555k sf of retail space, including a Woolworth 5 & 10 and Von's Supermarket. The property has seen considerable changes over the years, including a major expansion/redevelopment in the late 1980s, the addition of a Magic Johnson 15-plex cinema in 1995 and the placement of a three-level Wal-Mart in 2003.

Additional changes as part of the current renovation at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw include a new children’s play area, new community room and concierge services with a broader range of services. Other improvements include new family restrooms, a new specialty kiosk and cart program, and signage.
