You don’t want to miss the 9th Annual Cruisin' For A Cure, the huge one-day car show and one of the country's most successful prostate cancer fundraisers, celebrates all things automotive on Saturday, September 27, 2008, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Some 4,000 hot rods, street rods, customs, military vehicles, fire trucks, big rigs, classic cars, Corvettes, Mini-Coopers, Vipers, Prowlers, Dodge Magnums and rare and one-of-a-kind vehicles will be on display, plus 200 automotive vendors will exhibit a dazzling array of products.
One lucky car lover will win a 1933 Ford full-fendered Roadster, donated by Legend Motors Worldwide, with a 383 fast burn engine, courtesy of Guaranty Chevrolet. But the truly lucky ones may have their lives saved because free PSA prostate cancer screening tests are available throughout the day to men over 40. Last year, 899 men were tested, and 107 - nearly 12 percent - were advised to “contact your doctor.” Organizers of the “save-your-life” car show hope to test 1,500 men this year.
Proceeds from Cruisin' For A Cure, which is held in conjunction with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (September), benefit prostate cancer research at UCLA's Jonsson Comp rehensive Cancer Center, the #1 cancer center in California, according to US News & World Report.
Other highlights include a one-and-one-half mile cruise course with shimmering beauties rolling along bumper to bumper all day long, a model car contest and live entertainment by country music star Casey Simpson and the rock 'n roll group The Answer to Classic Rock. Dave McClelland, “the Voice of the National Hot Rod Association,” wraps the action by presenting more than 65 awards in such categories as “Coolest Convertible,” “ Best of 20's,” “Best Chick's Rod,” “Best Custom,” “Big, Bad and Blown,” “Best Woody” and many more.
Describing the purpose of the fun-filled family show, Cruisin' For A Cure President and Founding Chair Debbie Baker, a resident of Lake Forest, CA whose husband is a prostate cancer survivor says, “We hook the guys with cars then raise their awareness about prostate cancer to save lives. Since we began offering free PSA testing in 2001, more than 5,200 men have taken advantage of the testing, which takes only ten minutes. We've saved 700 men because they were notified that they had elevated PSA levels, an indicator of prostate cancer. If the disease is diagnosed and treated early enough, those men can live healthy normal lives. So annual PSA testing is imperative.”
