Chapman University and UC Irvine Graduate Real Estate Teams to Face Off in First Ever NAIOP SoCal OC Real Estate Challenge

4/21/22

For the first time ever, NAIOP SoCal will hold an OC Real Estate Challenge between graduate student teams from the Chapman University Argyros School of Business & Economics and the University of California, Irvine Paul Merage School of Business Center for Real Estate.

On Thursday, April 28, five-member student teams from each university will compete head-to-head in a real estate challenge on the highest and best use for a 6.9-acre site in Anaheim. To claim victory, the winning team must accrue the most points during written and oral presentations to the property owner, a judging panel of local commercial real estate industry leaders and a live audience. Students had four weeks to prepare their proposals.

This is the first time NAIOP SoCal is bringing together Chapman University and UCI for its OC Real Estate Challenge, similar to the success of the chapter’s USC vs UCLA LA Real Estate Challenge held annually since 1997. Both events serve to better connect NAIOP SoCal and its commercial real estate industry members to the faculty and staff of these area universities and up and coming talent that they are developing.

The 2022 NAIOP SoCal OC Real Estate Challenge Project involves multiple parcels totaling 6.9 acres in northern Downtown Anaheim. The active site is owned by a private family and is an urban infill location immediately adjacent to Anaheim’s 19-acre Pearson Park. The infill location in the heart of Downtown Anaheim positions it well for a variety of uses. Each team’s proposal will balance a highest and best use consideration of the site with the city’s desire to better integrate and activate the adjacent uses.

“The OC Real Estate Challenge is a unique opportunity to bring greater awareness to the talent of these outstanding students. While the chapter has long celebrated the USC vs UCLA rivalry, this new challenge will showcase the strong expertise and growth of the real estate programs within UCI and Chapman University that are creating the next generation of industry leaders here in Orange County. I look forward to what the students will present in this first-time competition,” said David Salisbury, NAIOP SoCal OC Real Estate Challenge Chair.

The event will be held at 5:00 pm at Chapman University, in Beckman Hall, Room 404, in the George Bush Conference Center, One University Drive, in Orange, CA. To register: visit NAIOP SoCal.
