A major shift is occurring in what will be required through the state building codes. Sustainability and consideration of the environment are now important factors.
BOMA California has supported using the code process to implement green policies in building construction, and a new State Green Building Advisory Committee which is under the wing of the State Building Standards Commission will be the starting place.
On February 13 and 14, this Committee met to adopt proposed changes to the State’s Building Code to incorporate new green building standards. Whatever codes are written and adopted will impact commercial office buildings around the state as soon as January 1, 2010.
As part of a large coalition, our industry successfully fended off an ill-conceived LEED mandate bill in the Legislature last year, arguing that the Building Standards code process should be employed to implement greener construction standards. That process is now occurring and the state is fast-tracking these new codes.
Although some of these building standards will initially be voluntary, owners should assume that any voluntary measure on this adoption cycle will become mandatory in the next adoption cycle.
