28 Jones Lang LaSalle-Managed Buildings are Energy Stars

2/21/08

One management company that has embraced efforts to make commercial buildings more energy efficient is Jones Lang LaSalle, which saw 28 of the buildings it manages across the United States be awarded Energy Star certification this year. Including past years, 41 buildings managed by Jones Lang LaSalle have received Energy Star certification, including more than a dozen which have been certified in multiple years.

“Jones Lang LaSalle has been a supporter of Energy Star for nearly a decade, and recently renewed its commitment to this great program for maximizing energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of office and commercial buildings,” said Gary Graham, Vice President and head of energy services at Jones Lang LaSalle. “At a time when owners and tenants alike are focused on energy and sustainability issues, we’re very pleased that so many of the buildings we manage meet the standard for this important designation.”

The 2008 Energy Star certified buildings managed by Jones Lang LaSalle are located in 12 states and include both owner-investor properties in addition to corporate owner-occupied facilities. Two of the largest Energy Star properties are the Procter & Gamble General Offices complex in Cincinnati and 51 Madison Avenue in New York, each totaling about 1.5 msf in size.

The Energy Star program is an initiative of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to assist citizens and businesses to save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. It was launched by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 1999, the EPA extended the Energy Star program to residential, office and commercial buildings that demonstrate a high degree of energy efficiency.

Office buildings that earn the Energy Star label typically use about 35 percent less energy than average buildings. Commercial and industrial buildings — office buildings, schools, grocery stores, hospitals, etc. — account for half of all energy consumption in the United States at a cost of more than $200 bil per year, more than any other sector of the economy. These facilities are also responsible for nearly half of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. There are now more than 4,000 buildings nationwide and the number of Energy Star-labeled buildings are growing exponentially every year.

Jones Lang LaSalle formed partnership commitment with the Energy Star program in 1999 and renewed its commitment in December 2007. The firm was named an Energy Star Partner of the Year in March 2007.

“As our Energy and Sustainability Services grows exponentially, Energy Star is more important than ever as a proven strategy for helping clients reduce their operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions,” aid Dan Probst, Chairman of the Global Sustainability Board at Jones Lang LaSalle.
