Update on LA’s Plan to Alter Traffic Patterns on Olympic and Pico

2/20/08

Here’s a recent update about a proposed plan to alter traffic routes in West LA that is of great interest to many commuters, along with many local businesses, property owners and residents in the area. The article is reprinted from the February 12, 2008 edition of BOMA of Greater Los Angeles’ Front Line.

A number of BOMA members are concerned that the City of LA proposal to alter traffic patterns on Olympic and Pico Boulevards would negatively affect their properties. Of even more concern is that the L.A. Department of Transportation has not held hearings or formal meetings to discuss the traffic plan and its impact.

The Olympic/Pico Traffic plan would direct traffic westbound on Olympic and eastbound on Pico, with a single lane the opposite direction for limited access purposes. The plan would be rolled out in three phases:

Phase I: Curb parking elimination with parking enforcement by March 2008;
Phase II: Signalization/ “preferential” modification to favor Olympic west and Pico east in April;
Phase III: Re-striping with contra lane in June.

L.A. Councilmember Bill Rosendahl held a Town Hall meeting in his district on January 9th, and many in attendance expressed concern about lost business due to the traffic redirection. Also, many were concerned that no environmental reports or studies had been completed to identify options and obtain input to the process.

BOMA’s Government Affairs Committee discussed the issue recently, and will be researching further the City’s proposal.
