The Hanover Company Breaks Ground on San Jose Res Development

8/30/21

The Hanover Company has broken ground on Winchester Apartments, a 366-unit, multifamily project in San Jose. Designed by KTGY, the seven-story development boasts an amenity-rich community aimed at serving active professionals and multi-generational residents.

Located between the historic and beloved Winchester Mystery House and I-280, Winchester Apartments sits in an area being re-envisioned as a walkable counterpart to the popular Santana Row. The master plan sits on 15.7 acres and includes a neighborhood of stacked flats and townhomes – also designed by KTGY – all of which are adjacent to historical landmarks Winchester Mystery House and the Century 21 movie theater.

Designed to meet the evolving living preferences of Bay Area residents, Winchester Apartments offers a variety of layouts, including studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom floorplans spanning 560 sf to 1.6k sf. Amenities include courtyards, private and interactive amenity spaces, a fitness center, pool, dog run, pet wash, screening room, café and designated co-working areas. A two-level parking garage is outfitted with 515 spaces to ensure ample parking for residents.

Slated for completion in 2023, the development takes advantage of the synergies occurring in close proximity to the site. The community’s contemporary architectural design was inspired by the movement and speed found off the I-280 and depicts shadowing and horizontality on the building’s façade to mimic passing cars on the highway.

KTGY also worked closely with the Historical Landmark Committee to create a respectful relationship with the neighboring Mystery House, with the northern facing side of the massing humbly melting into the mansion’s gardens. The building’s natural color composition is enhanced with a stylized and transparent skin-style frontage and glassy front entrance, and the 700-foot-long corridor will promote connectivity between the multifamily property and greater community, which will be home to a future three-acre park that sits in the larger master plan.

Project partners for Winchester Apartments include: Litzenberger Engineering Inc, mechanical and plumbing; Candela Engineering, electrical; Aegis Fire Systems Inc, fire/sprinkler; Giacalone Design Services, joint trench; CEA, civil engineering; and vanderToolen Associates, landscape architect.
