It is with great sadness we report the passing of John Jay, President and COO of Oakland-based Jay-Phares Corporation (JCP). A regular on the retail panels at RENTV’s Oakland / East Bay conferences, Jay was 72 years old.
Jay and his partner, Hugh (Ken) Phares, created Jay-Phares Corporation in 1988 as a development, brokerage, leasing and property management firm. The primary focus of the organization is the rehabilitation of core urban properties. Jay was also majority owner of Premiere Protective Service, a private patrol security company, and was a general contractor.
Jay first became involved in the shopping center industry in the 1960’s as a union laborer working summers on such Bay Area centers as Sun Valley Mall in Concord, the Safeway Broadway-Pleasant Valley Center in Oakland, and The Hub in Fremont. Upon graduation from Dartmouth College he was employed in Safeway’s world headquarters at Jack London Square in Oakland as a Real Estate Development Analyst. He later worked in Safeway’s Sacramento and Los Angeles Divisions, then for Vons Grocery Company.
After leaving the supermarket industry, Jay worked as a Project Manager for Dillingham Investments and was Chief Operating Officer for the Fritz Duda Company. During his time with these companies, he developed seven shopping centers in California, Iowa, and Illinois.
With his own company, Jay recently developed the 140k sf Solano 80 Shopping Center in Vallejo, anchored by Mi Pueblo, Rite Aid, CitiTrends, and Harbor Freight Tools. He also was just now completing the redevelopment of Foothill Square in Oakland, a 200k sf center anchored by FoodsCo (Kroger), Ross, Wells Fargo Bank, McDonalds, DaVita, and 17 other retail, medical, and public service tenants.
Jay had been a member of ICSC, ULI, NACORE, BIA, and NAIOP.
