Meta Housing Corporation and Cesar Chavez Foundation Start Work on Affordable Housing Community in Los Angeles

4/22/22

Meta Housing Corporation and Cesar Chavez Foundation Inc have broken ground on a 78-unit affordable housing community for families and individuals in Los Angeles. The 82.6k sf development, located at 619 Westlake, is a reuse of underutilized city property that will focus on supporting people who have experienced the fallout of the housing crisis.

Units at 619 Westlake will be priced for households earning 30% to 60% of the area’s median income, with 39 of the apartments planned as permanent supportive housing for people with a serious mental illness who have faced the challenge of homelessness. The project is a partnered effort between Meta Housing Corporation, Milender White, Cesar Chavez Foundation, The Architects Collective and Los Angeles Housing Department.

The community will feature a “building block” design, with two towers of three-bedroom apartments linked by a dramatic “bridge” of one-bedroom units spanning a lushly landscaped courtyard.

“Recent data shows that at least half of the state of California’s 49,000 chronically homeless people live in Los Angeles County,” says Kasey Burke, President at Meta Housing. “This is a staggering statistic that has worsened from the ongoing housing crisis coupled with the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation.”

According to Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis “This crucial project will be integrated into the rich history/story of our beloved city. It’s located near the historic Westlake Theater and just east of Los Angeles’ iconic MacArthur Park. The project is also heavily transit oriented, with the Westlake/Macarthur Park train stop within a mile of the complex.”
