Construction has started on The Curve @ West Angeles Senior Apartments, a 70-unit residential project located near the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd and 54th St in the Park Mesa Heights area of Los Angeles. The development, a project of the West Angeles Community Development Corporation and Related Companies of California, was designed by Santa Monica-based architecture firm KFA.
The 52.8k sf, five-story building will contain 40 low-income units, 29 very-low-income units, and one market-rate manager's unit. The development is conveniently located just two blocks north of the Crenshaw/Slauson Station in Park Mesa Heights, which is currently under construction and slated for opening in 2019.
“This affordable senior housing project is located in South LA’s Crenshaw Corridor, which is being revitalized by the coming of the new light rail line along most of Crenshaw Blvd that will connect the recently completed Expo Line with LAX,” said KFA Partner John Arnold, AIA. “The design was inspired by the Crenshaw Corridor’s history of 1930s and 1940s Art Deco architecture, such as the historic Baldwin Hills Mall and the Vision Theater on Leimert Park Plaza,” he added.
The project went through an extensive conceptual design phase that focused on sustainability and quality of life for residents. The design is centered along a linear courtyard that is programmed for active walking and open on both ends to allow ample light and air.
