775-Acre CA Gold Country Winery to Be Auctioned Off in Two Parcels

6/01/15

The award-winning Chatom Winery and Vineyards will be sold through auction on June 26th, 2015. The 775-acre property is located at 1969 Highway 4 in Douglas Flat, about 60 miles east of Stockton in the heart of California’s “Gold Country. It will be offered in two parcels at auction with equipment and bottled estate wine inventory included for beginning immediate operations.

Parcel One includes the fully operational Winery with current production averaging approximately 12,000 cases annually (permitted to 25,000 cases). Parcel Two is comprised of the approximately 744-acre ranch, along with a 64-acre vineyard and residence.

The auction is being handled by Newmark Cornish & Carey Wine Services and auction leader Williams & Williams Worldwide Real Estate Auction.

Designed to be eco-friendly with a rammed-earth designed structure, Chatom Winery is the centerpiece of the 32-acre Parcel One which comprises a tasting room with office space and an upstairs apartment unit, crushpad, barrel room, wine cellar and catering equipment to host events in the landscaped gardens. Chatom Winery has a loyal clientele, subscription wine club and an annual contract for third party crush services.

Located just 12 miles from the Winery in the picturesque Esmeralda Valley of Calaveras County, Chatom Vineyards is part of Parcel Two, an approximately 744-acre working ranch which also includes an approximately 4k sf main residence with swimming pool, homes for the ranch managers and hands, barns, sheds, workshops and small livestock pasture. Notably, the main residence was reportedly built on the site of the old Post Office where Mark Twain mailed his now famous manuscript, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” The historical site also contains Indian grinding rocks and mine claims from the gold rush days with mine shafts and antique mining equipment remaining on site.

Chatom Vineyards consists of 64 acres of approximately 30-year-old vines planted to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Sangiovese, Semillon and five Portuguese varietals. It sits at a 1,500-foot elevation in the Sierra Foothills Appellation of Northeastern California where hot, dry days and nightly cool mountain breezes create the perfect climate for growing premium varietals. The compact mountain valley grapes are high in quality and flavor and the wines are typically higher in alcohol, intense in flavor and pair well with most foods. Chatom Vineyards continues to produce concentrated, fruit forward wines that drink well now and develop in complexity as aged.

The auction will take place at Chatom Winery with nominal opening bids of $500k per parcel. Bidders are able to attend the live auction onsite or may bid simultaneously online from anywhere around the world through Williams & Williams sister company at auctionnetwork.com.
