On November 20, the five-member graduate student team from the Ziman Center at UCLA’s Anderson School of Business was awarded the Silver Shovel during the annual NAIOP SoCal Real Estate Challenge. This is a highly anticipated yearly event in the LA area, as it is a competition between top real estate graduate students from USC and UCLA, the big Los Angeles universities where many SoCal real estate pros went to school.
This year’s event, held at Covel Commons at UCLA, was attended by close to 300 industry professionals. CT Realty CEO & President James “Watty” Watson was host for the night. The student teams competed on a prime 21-acre location in Costa Mesa which was one of three printing facilities operated by the Los Angeles Times until approximately 2010. The UCLA team’s winning proposal was titled “The Platform” and called for a mixed-use development at the site. The competition included the five-member team from the Lusk Center at USC’s Marshall School of Business.
The evening also featured color commentary from former UCLA quarterback Cade McNown and former USC quarterback Paul McDonald who talked about the upcoming USC vs UCLA football game – which was also won by UCLA! The UCLA team was comprised of Jack Agresta, Reisa Bloch, Patrick Devitt, Ian O’Neill, Mark Simpson, along with faculty advisor Paul Habibi.
USC’s team included students Michael Breiman, Willis Chin, Aaron Goldstein, Chadwick Manista, Alvin Zhu, and faculty advisor Christian L. Redfearn
